Start with LEDs
For most household applications, LED bulbs are the practical starting point. They use substantially less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs, produce less waste heat and generally last much longer. Specialty fixtures can be different, so always check the fixture and bulb specifications.
Lumens tell you how bright the bulb is
Watts describe electrical power use; lumens describe visible light output. When replacing an older incandescent bulb, think about the brightness you liked and look for a similar lumen output rather than matching its wattage.
- About 450 lumens: similar brightness to a traditional 40-watt incandescent.
- About 800 lumens: a common replacement target for a traditional 60-watt bulb.
- About 1,100 lumens: roughly the brightness associated with a traditional 75-watt bulb.
- About 1,600 lumens: roughly the brightness associated with a traditional 100-watt bulb.
These are useful comparison points, not a requirement for every room. Multiple fixtures, shade design, wall colors and ceiling height all change how bright a room feels.
Kelvin changes how a room feels
3000K: warm but a little cleaner and crisper.
4000K: neutral/cooler task-oriented light.
5000K: daylight-like and noticeably cooler.
Bedrooms and living rooms often feel comfortable around 2700Kâ3000K. Kitchens, work areas and garages may benefit from somewhat cooler light. There is no universal perfect temperature; consistency among nearby fixtures often matters as much as the number itself.
Look at CRI when color matters
Color Rendering Index, or CRI, indicates how naturally colors appear under a light source. Higher-CRI LEDs can be especially worthwhile around mirrors, kitchens, closets, artwork, finishes and anywhere accurate color matters.
Match the base and bulb shape
A bulb can have the right brightness and still not fit. Check the base and physical shape of the bulb you are replacing. Common household lamps often use a medium screw base, while chandeliers, recessed fixtures, track lighting and decorative fixtures can use very different bases and shapes. When unsure, take the old bulb with you or photograph its markings.
Dimmers require compatible equipment
If a fixture is on a dimmer, choose a bulb specifically labeled dimmable. Older dimmers designed around incandescent loads may not work smoothly with every LED and can cause flickering, buzzing, limited dimming range or failure to shut off cleanly. Compatibility among the LED, fixture and dimmer matters.
Enclosed fixtures need the right bulb
LED electronics are sensitive to heat. If the bulb will operate inside a fully enclosed fixture, use a bulb rated for that application. Also confirm suitability for damp or wet locations when installing lighting in bathrooms, covered exterior areas or exposed outdoor fixtures.
Smart bulbs
Smart LEDs can add scheduling, remote control, dimming, color adjustment and automation without replacing the entire fixture. Before buying, check whether the bulb requires Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a hub or a particular smart-home ecosystem. Remember that many smart bulbs need the wall switch left on to remain connected.
A simple room-by-room starting point
- Living room: warm light, layered between lamps and ceiling fixtures.
- Bedroom: warm, comfortable light with dimming where useful.
- Kitchen: good brightness and color quality, particularly over counters and food-prep areas.
- Bathroom: strong color rendering around mirrors and fixtures rated for the location.
- Office/workbench: brighter, clearer task lighting that reduces shadows.
- Garage: broad, bright coverage with attention to fixture temperature and operating conditions.
- Exterior: bulbs and fixtures specifically rated for the exposure, with brightness aimed carefully to avoid unnecessary glare for neighbors.
Why does an LED flicker?
Common causes include an incompatible dimmer, loose connection, failing bulb electronics or problems with the fixture or circuit. Try a known-compatible bulb when appropriate, but persistent flickering, unusual heat, burning smells, arcing, repeated failures or electrical abnormalities deserve professional attention.
Before buying, check these seven things
- Base type.
- Bulb shape and physical dimensions.
- Lumens.
- Kelvin/color temperature.
- CRI if color quality matters.
- Dimmable or non-dimmable.
- Enclosed-fixture and damp/wet-location ratings where applicable.
