How to Choose the Right Lawn Mower

Match the mower to the yard

Battery vs. gas

Battery mowers are quieter, require less routine engine maintenance and work well for many suburban lawns. Gas models can still make sense for longer run times, heavy cutting or properties where charging logistics are difficult.

Features worth paying for

Useful upgrades can include self-propulsion, easy height adjustment, foldable storage, interchangeable batteries, mulching capability and a deck width that fits your gates and storage space.

What ownership costs beyond the purchase price

Plan for blades, battery replacement or engine service, fuel or electricity, trimmer/edger needs and seasonal storage. The cheapest mower is not always the lowest-cost mower over several years.

Safety: Read the manufacturer's operating instructions, inspect the mowing area for debris, and never disable guards or safety interlocks. When in doubt, consult a qualified and licensed professional familiar with the codes and requirements in your area.
